The Worlds of Herman Kahn: The Intuitive Science of Thermonuclear War

I had a marvelous time researching this book. I was beguiled by so many topics, meandered down so many pathways of interest that my original manuscript ran over a thousand pages. I want to share some of the materials I found with you.

This bibliography is divided into two parts: cullings from newspapers, magazines, and periodicals from the 1950s and early 1960s, and scholarly literature on cold war science and technology.

Contemporary Periodicals | Scholarly Literature

In the section called “Contemporary Periodicals ” I offer topics that roam across the cultural and social landscape of the era, following the themes and anxieties that wreathed around Herman Kahn. Take a look at them. Most are prefaced with a series of quotes that give a flavor of the discussion.

“Scholarly Literature” is for people who want to press further into the details of cold war science, technology, war-making, and the national security state. Several years ago, I had the good fortune to be a post-doctoral fellow in the history of cold war science at Carnegie Mellon University. Our research group posted a smaller, but similar bibliography on the web. This collection grew out of that seed, and is offered in recollection of the generosity and pleasure that was the dominant note of our collaboration. To the expert eye, omissions will be immediately apparent. While by no means exhaustive, the bibliography will do for a running leap.

I have also compiled a list of Recommended Books. Enjoy!
